War of words

Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall went face to face and argued after the American’s victorious UK debut.

February 6th, 2022

She came, she saw, she conquered.

Saturday in Cardiff, Claressa Shields totally dominated her opponent Ema Kozin and won a unanimous decision to retain her IBF, WBA, and WBC middleweight championships and edge a step closer to facing WBO titleholder Marshall.

Marshall was ringside watching Shields’ performance, and mockingly yawned and pretended to fall asleep during the UK debut for the two-time Olympic champion.

Marshall was fully awake and on the offensive when the two rivals met after the fight.

“If you perform like that against me, I’ll absolutely wipe the floor with you,” Marshall warned.

Shields shouted back: “I’m not scared of you. You didn’t come to America. I came here!”

Marshall: “Wind your neck in.”

Shields: “I’m chasing you.”

Marshall: “People were walking out [during your fight!] It was embarrassing.”

Shields had said: “The girl I want is Marshall. That’s why I’m here. She knows that.”

Tempers flared as Shields got into Marshall’s face and the pair had to be separated.

On the fight, Shields said: “I give myself an A-. The only thing I didn’t do was get the damn knockout!”

Marshall must first defend her belt against Femke Hermans on March 12, live on Sky Sports before one of the most exciting match-ups in women’s boxing can become reality.
